2013 SENIOR AMATEUR GOLF TOUR SEPTEMBER 12, 2013 BENTWINDS CC ----- |
Bentwinds - Secures its Place As one of Top Playing Private Courses in the Triangle. Bentwinds Country Club was designed and shaped through farm lands and tall pines and oaks. Recently renovated, Kris Spence took what was a great base to make Bentwinds one of Central North Carolina’s finest golf courses. Strategic bunker placement and wonderfully defined tiff sport bermudagrass fairways creates challenging shot angles to the A-1 A-4 bentgrass greens. Tour players will encounter narrow fairways, sloping greens, and a variety of hazards at Bentwinds. Regardless of when you play Bentwinds finishing holes Nos 16, 17, and 18, they could present difficult challenges that will require you to carefully place your tee shots and demand solid iron play to reach these well-protected greens. Tour Members who have played here before, always makes this venue one of the courses they play during the season. For you newbies, that means don't miss this gem. ACE, LOW SCORES HIGHLIGHT SR. AMATEUR TOUR EVENT Clemmons, NC September 5, 2013 Hole-In-Ones are nothing new to Asheboro's Joe Prairie. He has 13 career "aces". including 7 in tournament play. Consequently when he hit his 9-iron 6 inches from the hole and saw it politely drop into the cup on the 133 yard, par-3, 2nd hole during the Senior Amateur Golf Tour event being held at Salem Glen Golf and Country Club today he took it in stride. "Anybody can make a hole-in-one" stated Prairie. "That's why I'd rather finish strong and win the event". He would have had to finish very strong, as a number of his A Flight opponents had some of their best Tour scores ever. Leading that pack was Reidsville's Steve Manley who fashioned a 72 to take top honors in the flight. Trailing Manley by 3 shots were 2 players - Greensboro's David Coolidge and Winston-Salem's David Frye. Manley tied the winning score in the Championship Flight. posted by Pinehurst's Steve DeBolt. It should be noted however that the Championship Flight played from tees that were 300 yards farther back than their other flight counterparts. Whispering Pines Ron Hockensmith and Thomasville's Dan Anthony both finished 2 in back of DeBolt. The low scores continued in both the B and C Flights where Glenn Wright of Pittsboro and Archdale's Elby Hatfield respectively fired their best scores ever in Tour competition. Wright's B Flight win with a 74 was his 2nd career Tour victory but his 1st of this season. Hatfield who has won numerous events "on-Tour" in past seasons broke out of a prolonged slump to card a 77 - by far the best score he has posted this season. Youngsville's Jerry Snead was 4 shots off of Wright's B Flight pace, while Hartfield cruised to a 7 shot win over Pinehurst's Wayne Ricks in the C Flight. The next stop for the Senior Amateur Tour is Bentwinds Country Club in Fuquay-Varina on September 12. There are openings available for that event. =============================================================== Rules Review It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score? Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009. I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm. There will be no trick questions or hidden information.
If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions =============================================================== |
Question from week #216 Marge has found her ball close to a retaining wall, the base of which is planted with widely spaced bushes. The wall is not deemed an integral part of the course. If she were to play the ball as it lies she thinks she would need to hit a low rescue under the nearest bush, however her backswing is partially obstructed by the wall. A fellow competitor confirms that she is entitled to immovable obstruction relief under R24-2b. She properly finds the nearest point of relief and correctly drops within one club-length of that point. After the drop, the point her ball has come to rest affords her sufficient room from the bush such that she could now hit a 9-iron or pitching wedge over the bush but if she were to still use the rescue as originally planned, the wall is still a hindrance. How should Marge proceed? A. Marge may change clubs for the next shot provided the wall does not interfere with her stroke with this new club. B. Marge may not change clubs for her next stroke, she is committed to using the rescue at this point and must re-drop her ball. C. Marge may change clubs for her next stroke, but at this point she must still re-drop as she does not have complete relief with her rescue. D. Marge has taken proper relief and may change clubs at this point, if she again has interference with the wall with the new club she may take relief a second time from this new spot because it is a different type of stroke.
Answer: C. When dropping her ball, Marge must drop her ball on a spot that avoids interference by the immovable obstruction. (R24-2b) The point where her ball comes to rest, must also avoid interference with the immovable obstruction (R20-2c (v)). “Interference” is determined by using the same club with which she originally claimed the need for relief in the first place. After it is determined she has no interference using the original club selection, she may change her method of stroke, direction of stroke or club selected for play. Only then, if the wall were to again interfere with her next stroke, would this be treated as a separate relief process. Note the use of the phrase “integral part of the course”. When the Committee declares an artificial object, pathway, etc., as an integral part of the course, that feature would no longer be considered an obstruction if encountered during play of the course. The player would have to treat it as a natural feature no different from a large boulder or similar object. I once played a course in Maryland that had two small historic barns on the first hole. One was OB the other was on the course property and treated as an integral part of the course. You had to play the hole between them with no relief whatsoever. ============================================== |

=============================================================== TTour Weather Guidelines Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If Primarily, the course is open, we're going to play. The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness). In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist. Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening. If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start. Bruce |
