2 VETS, 2 FIRST TIMERS TAKE SENIOR TOUR MAJOR TITLES
Mebane, NC
May 17, 2012
Two Tour Veterans - Lewisville's Mike Smith in the Championship Flight and Benny Miller of Raleigh in the C Flight are used to winning "on-Tour". Two other players - Glenn Garrett of Durham in the A Flight and B Flighter Bob Dail of Wendell enjoyed their first Tour victories today at Mill Creek Golf Club in the 2012 season's second "Major" Championship on the Senior Amateur Golf Tour. Winning in a Major event is significant, because winners of the 4 Majors contested each year automatically qualify for the year-ending Senior Amateur Golf Tour National Championship in Pinehurst.
"It's good to know I'm in at the end of the year" stated Garrett, who will represent the Raleigh/Pinehurst Tour in November against players from the other eleven Tours in the system.
In Championship Flight play, Smith nipped Cary's Mark Craige by a single stroke after posting a 1-under 71. Garrett's 72 was 2 shots clear of A Flight playing partner Randy Jones of Greensboro who was playing in only his second Tour event.
Bob Dail was the only B Flight member to break 80 with a 76 and a comfortable 5 shot margin over six golfers. "It was just a matter of time 'til Dail was gonna break through", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck.
It wasn't quite so easy for Miller in the C Flight. After posting an extremely low C Flight score of 81, he found himself tied with Durham's Bill McGee after regulation play ended. They headed back out on the course to hole #18 to begin their sudden death playoff. Suddenly acting more like C Flighters than the duo that posted 81s, McGee found four sand traps on the hole and allowed Miller's double bogie to claim victory. "Kind of anti-climactic after the torrid pace they set on the original 18 (holes)", noted Hallenbeck.
The Senior Tour has next week off for Memorial Day and will resume play on May 31 at Bermuda Run West. There are openings left for that event.

Extra Income in 2012?
Earlier this year, millions of people set a New Year's resolution to make more money, but 99% of them will fail to achieve them in 2012.
Their mistake?
They focus too much on setting the goal and ignore the need for an action plan.
But you can't get to a new place in life without directions. If you want to build a business or a second income, then you need a map.
Fortunately there is one prepared for you - a proven blueprint for additional income success.
All you have to do is take control of it on YOUR own terms and still be able to play golf when you want.

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?
Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.
I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.
There will be no trick questions or hidden information.
If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions |
Question from week #146
In a stroke play event, with the flagstick in the hole, Dan makes a stroke at his ball from on the putting green. Fearing that Dan's ball may strike the flagstick, fellow competitor Mike, goes and pulls the flagstick as Dan's ball is on the way. Unfortunately, Dan's ball strikes Mike's shoe.
Concerning this incident, choose all correct statements:
A. Dan is penalized two strokes.
B. Mike is penalized two strokes.
C. Dan must play the ball as it lies
D. Dan must replace and replay the stroke.
Answer
Both answers B and D are correct.
The flagstick was not attended.
If not attended to begin with, it must not be attended during the stroke or while a player's ball is in motion if doing so might influence the movement of the ball ('-1).
Obviously, since Dan's ball struck Mike's shoe, Mike's action is considered Unauthorized Attendance and is specifically covered by Rule 17-2. Mike is penalized the general penalty of 2 strokes.
( Answer B).
You can arrive at the second correct answer either by further reading of the penalty statement under '-2 or by reference to Rule 19. Dan's ball in motion was deflected or stopped by Mike's foot which for stroke play, is deemed an outside agency (R19-4 & 19-1). Since this happened to a ball in motion after a stroke on the putting green, the stroke is canceled and Mike must replace and replay his stroke. (R19-1b)
( Answer D).
Take a moment to read Rule 17-2, for it is a simple statement that covers 24 different specific scenarios.
Can you come up with a scenario where this happens and no player is penalized yet the ball would be replaced and replayed? |

Tour Weather Guidelines
Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If the course is open, we're going to play.
The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).
In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.
Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.
If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
