Brier Creek Country Club e-newsletter Summary
(Please Accept My Apologies for Naming the Incorrect Course for the 1st Major of the Season .....chill)
Congratulations to all the flight winners at Devils Ridge.
This week is the first Major Tournament of the season at Brier Creek Country Club in the Raleigh area.
For you newbies, all Major Tournaments sell-out because of the double points that are awarded and there is a waiting list for Brier Creek. You can still get on the waiting list and hope someone drops out.
A Major awards double points to all golfers regardless of where you finish in your flight. There will be plenty of points to be earned for the accurate golfer and those who can manage their way around Brier Creek.
Here’s your chance to move up in the standings and get early bragging rights. If you are signed-up for Brier Creek, we will see you next Thursday.
Hint to the others - If you know you want to play a course, sign-up and pay now for all the courses you want to play in 2012.
Also, please read the Devils Ridge story and review the Full Leaderboard at the bottom of the newsletter to see how you fared against your flight competitors.
Hopefully, for the rules review you read the details on water hazard the last 2 weeks. This week we will be looking at your options to replace a broken club during a round.
We see more of you getting comfortable with clicking and buying online from the comfort of your home and having products shipped to your door.
New products and services will continue to be added and we know you will find these services and prices to your liking and advantage as well. Let us know what other products you would like to see added.

TWO VETS, TWO ROOKIES WIN IN SENIOR AMATEUR TOUR EVENT AT DEVILS RIDGE
March 22, 2012
Holly Springs, NC
Devils Ridge Country Club Flight Winners (L to R):
Championship - Doug Michal, A Flight - Rick Lafata, C Flight - Willie Brady, B-Flight - Randy Robbins (photo not available)
Raleigh's Rick LaFata and Zebulon's Willie Brady both posted impressive scores to win their respective flights today at Devils Ridge Country Club in a Senior Amateur Golf Tour event.
LaFata's 74 took A Flight top honors over Southern Pines' Ron Hockensmith by 2 strokes. LaFata is in his 1st year of competition "on-Tour", and this win was his first as a Tour member.
Brady turned the same milestone in the C Flight with an 83 that propelled him to his 1st Tour win. His margin of victory was even greater than LaFata's as 4 strokes separated him from runner-up Harold Booker of Raleigh.
In the other 2 flights contested today, Tour veterans maintained control with solid victories. In the Championship Flight, Raleigh's Doug Michal posted an even-par 72 to edge the defending champion in this event from last year, Rick Luzar of Pinehurst, by a single stroke.
Meanwhile, in B Flight action, Randy Robbins of Smithfield continued his hot play this season with an 80. He needed every good shot he hit as 2 fellow competitors - Raleigh's John Messner and Malcolm Griffith of Holly Springs finished with 81s.
Next up for The Senior Amateur Tour is the 2012 season's first "Major" Championship, which will be played next Thursday at Brier Creek Country Club in Raleigh. All available spots in that event have been "sold-out" - the 5th such event this season.

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score? Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009. I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm. There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

Question from week #138
Tommy "The Torch" Tillotson started the round with only 13 clubs as he broke his 5-iron on the driving range warming up. After four putting the eighth hole, he snapped his putter in two and putted using his rescue on the 9th. At the turn, without causing delay, he grabbed another putter out of his trunk and used it on the back nine to complete the stipulated round.
Select the True statements:
1. In stroke play, Tommy incurred two penalty strokes each on holes 10 and 11.
2. In Match play, Tommy's match would be adjusted by deducting one hole at the completion of the 10th hole and again on the 11th hole.
3. When Tommy deliberately damaged his club on #8 he could no longer use it without being DQed.
4. Tommy did not receive any club-related penalties since he started the round with fewer than 14 clubs and was entitled to add a club at any time provided it did not unduly delay play.
Answers
1. Is not true
2. Is not true
3. Is true
4. Is true
Rule 4-3, Damaged Clubs: Repair and Replacement is where you start to solve this situation. When a player damages a club during a stipulated round, other than in the normal course of play (think: on purpose), he may not use or replace the damaged club (R4-3b.) This makes answer 3 TRUE.
But, since "The Torch" broke his 5-iron warming up, he subsequently started the round with only 13 clubs. Rule 4-4 is very specific: a player who starts a round with fewer than 14 clubs may add any number of clubs provided he does not exceed 14 clubs and the addition of clubs does not unduly delay play.
And that is why answer 4 is also TRUE. Rule 4-4 does not restrict the type of club a player adds, it only restricts the total number of clubs.
In this situation, these two Rules may seem to be in opposition. But, stop and think about what Rule 4-4 affords the player; recognizing, before he broke his putter, The Torch could have added a second putter, bring his total to 14 clubs. Therefore if he could have done it earlier, there is nothing to prevent him from doing it later.
What he may not do, since at the turn he was down to 12 clubs, is add two. He can only add one and is limited to 13 clubs for the remainder of the round.
Oh, and for those who wonder about carrying around a broken putter and whether that counts as a club, a broken-shafted club or putter no longer meets the criteria for a club as specified in Appendix II. So it is not counted.

Tour Weather Guidelines
Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If the course is open, we're going to play.
The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).
In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.
Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.
If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
