2013 SENIOR AMATEUR GOLF TOUR OCTOBER 10, 2013 COLONIAL CC ----- |
------Colonial Country Club------ Golf course architect Gene Hamm left his mark throughout North Carolina, but perhaps none more memorable than the design at Colonial Country Club. Hamm has built courses in some of the finest areas in North Carolina, including the historic Pinehurst area. Hamm's work at Colonial proved to be one of his finest. Never one to disturb nature, Hamm carved the layout through hardwood forests leaving the natural contours of the land to provide the character of the course. The result was a wonderful test of golf that will thrill the Senior Tour members when they play Colonial CC. THE SENIOR AMATEUR GOLF TOUR BRYAN PARK EVENT TOP FIVE SCORES BY FLIGHT SEPTEMBER 26, 2013 =============================================================== |
ACE DOESN'T GUARANTEE SENIOR TOUR WIN Brown Summit, NC September 26, 2013 Summerfield's Steve Lambert made sure that no one was going to beat him in the closest-to-the-pin competition on the 155 yard, par 3, 7th hole at Bryan Park's Championship Course in today's Senior Amateur Golf Tour event. When the ball is literally touching the pin at the bottom of the cup it's a tough shot to beat. Lambert was undecided at first which club to hit on the hole. He said "In our group, we jokingly said it could be anywhere from a 6-iron to a knock-down wedge". He finally chose the 8 iron for his 2nd career "ace". "Although I was able to hole one out from 155 yards, unfortunately I missed a number of 4 foot putts early in the round which I knew would cost me a chance at winning" said Lambert. That honor belonged to Burlington's Gary Roberson, who registered his 2nd Tour win with a 74. Lambert wound up tied for 4th with a 76, while Reidsville's Randy Jones and Durham's Eric Ardery were tied for 2nd with 75s. Low score of the day belonged to Zebulon's Randy Bunn who took the A Flight with an even par 72. It should be noted that the A Flight played from tees about 400 yards shorter than the Championship Flight. Lewisville's Michael Greene was 2nd with a 74. Only one golfer was able to crack the 80 barrier in the B Flight - Durham's Neil Bleau with a 79. Two Tour members were one stroke in back of him. Both Fayetteville's Mike Wallace and Glenn Wright of Pittsboro hit 80 "on-the-nose". Charlotte's Sindo Mayor posted an 83 for the top spot in the C Flight with Raleigh's Richard Glick 2 strokes back. Anyone in the C Flight who broke 90 walked away with part of the prize pool. The Senior Amateur Tour will take a week off from competition and resume play at Colonial Country Club in Thomasville on October 10. There are a number of available spots for that event. WINNERS GO LOW IN SENIOR TOUR EVENT Graham, NC September 19, 2013 With less than a handful of events left to play before the regular season ends, some Senior Amateur Golf Tour members seem to be saving their best for last. "It seems that after almost a full season of play, some of these guys are really getting the hang of playing tournament golf", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "Every winning score today was very impressive". Starting with the Championship Flight, where it took a score of 2-under to just get in a playoff for the win, right down to the C Flight competition, if you weren't going low, you weren't finishing high. Durham's Eric Ardery and Randy Jones of Reidsville were the 2 Champ Flight members who finished at 70. Ardery took the championship with a birdie on their 1st extra hole of sudden-death playoff. That was not the only positive thing to happen for him on the day, as his eagle 3 on the par-5, 7th hole was the only skin to hold up in the combined Championship and A Flights Skins Pool. In the A Flight, 1st year player Steve Manley of Reidsville also posted a sub par number with a 71. He needed every good shot he hit as he finished only 1 shot ahead of Doug Masters from Clemmons. "Although the Championship guys played from about 300 yards farther back than the rest of the field, Manley's A Flight score was still very impressive", noted Hallenbeck. Ron Vanderklok of Advance was steady all day, then capped his round off by holing out from off the green on his last 2 holes to finish with a 73 and a 4-shot win in the B Flight competition. Chapel Hill's Grady Strickland was runner-up. The C Flight was a little tighter. Like the A Flight, there was only a 1 stroke difference separating 1st and 2nd places. The top honor belonged to Wake Forest's James Howard whose 81 was just barely enough to hold off Sophia's Dennis Bryant. =============================================================== THE SENIOR AMATEUR GOLF TOUR BENTWINDS EVENT TOP FIVE SCORES BY FLIGHT SEPTEMBER 12, 2013 |
=============================================================== PLAYOFF BIRDIE SCORES SENIOR AM TOUR WIN Fuquay-Varina, NC September 12, 2013 The 18th Hole at Bentwinds Country Club represents a real challenge. Even the longest hitters are forced to lay up short of a lake, resulting in a fairly long second shot over the water to a green protected by numerous bunkers on both sides. After Johnny Adams of Cary and Whispering Pines' Ron Hockensmith completed their rounds in the Senior Amateur Golf Tour event held at Bentwinds today with identical 75s, they proceeded out to that 18th hole to start their sudden-death playoff for the event's top spot in the Championship Flight. Adams was able to prevail on that very first hole with a birdie. "That's what you like to see", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck, "a Championship Flight playoff won by a birdie on one of the most difficult holes we play all year. A classy way for it to be decided". Another 'class act' was turned in by Pittsboro's Glenn Wright who took his second B Flight win in as many weeks with a 78 and a 3-shot win over a pair of golfers: Smithfield's Randy Robbins and James Dockery of Southern Pines. Wright's wins in consecutive events were his first 2 of this season and doubled his output from last year. Another Pittsboro Tour member also enjoyed the taste of victory as Dwight Davis recorded a 2 stroke win over Kernersville's Donald Brown in the C Flight - 82 to 84. Once again, the C Flight was the event's largest flight as Davis had to hold off 27 other players for his win. Wendell's Bob Dail had already set an A Flight Tour scoring record earlier this season, so it was no surprise that he would be one of the players to beat today. Although Greensboro's Jim Finnegan and Zebulon's Gus Alford both posted impressive scores of 76 each, it still left them one stroke behind Dail's 75. "Bob has improved greatly since starting with us a few years back", said Hallenbeck. "It's good to see him reach his potential". =============================================================== Rules Review It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score? Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009. I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm. There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

Questions from week #218 Concerning the relief associated with Ground Under Repair, R25-1, read the following statements and decide True or False: A. When I determine the nearest point of relief, that point must afford both swing and stance relief from the GUR before dropping. B. For a ball that lies through the green, I must drop the ball within one club-length of the nearest point of relief. Though the nearest point of relief may not be on a putting green, I could drop on a putting green if it lies within one club-length of that point, provided it was no closer to the hole. C. For a ball that lies on the green, I must place the ball within one club-length of the nearest point of relief, no closer to the hole. D. For a ball that lies in a bunker, I may, under penalty of one stroke, drop the ball outside the bunker within one club-length of the bunker, no closer to the hole. Answer A is TRUE. When you take relief, you establish the nearest point of relief. By definition, that point must be free of any interference with the condition. When you combine that with the specifics from R25-1, you see that interference includes both with the stroke or stance. If the player’s ball lies on the putting green, interference also occurs if the Abnormal Ground Condition (GUR, in this case), which must also be on the green, intervenes with the line of putt. B is FALSE. If the ball is not on the putting green to begin with, the ball must not be dropped nor placed upon the putting green when taking relief. Also, if it came to rest on the putting green it would need to be re-dropped. R25-1, b, (i). C is FALSE. Most players don’t realize that when taking relief on a putting green, you do not get the one club-length tagged on to the Nearest Point of Relief. Read R25-1,b, (iii) carefully. When taking relief from an Abnormal Ground Condition with your ball on the putting green, you place the ball AT the nearest point of relief. D is FALSE. The point at which I drop may well be within one club-length of the bunker, but it must be on a line that is anchored by the hole and goes through the original position of my ball as it lay in the bunker. I can go back on that line, behind the bunker, as far as I wish. See R25-1,b, (ii), (b).============================================== |

=============================================================== TTour Weather Guidelines Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If Primarily, the course is open, we're going to play. The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness). In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist. Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening. If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start. Bruce |
