GOLFWEEK AND SENIOR AMATEUR TOURS "KICKOFF" 2015 SEASON
Aberdeen, NC
(January 31, 2015) - Eighty-five Tour members ignored morning
temperatures in the teens to make their way to The Legacy Golf Links for the
2015 Pre-season Golfweek and Senior Amateur Golf Tours "Kick-Off"
event today. They were rewarded with sunny skies and temperatures that
reached the mid-fifties shortly after play started.
"When I left my
house to go to the course this morning, it was 16 degrees", stated Tour
Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "Although the forecast had called for
reasonable temperatures, I sure didn't think the conditions were going to turn
out as favorable as they did. Everybody on the course enjoyed the
day".
One player who enjoyed
the day more than most was Fayetteville's Larry Hardee. Hardee picked up
right where he left off last year when he won the season-long
Points Standings race for the Championship Flight by firing a
73. Charlotte's Mike Gentry was 2 shots back in second.
A last second entry into
the event, Raleigh's Tim Manyatis, posted a solid 74 for the A Flight win, one
of only 3 flight members to break 80. The other two were Sanford's Chuck
Smith (78) and Lexington's Don Tabat (79). While Manyatis was only 1
stroke back of Hardee's winning score in the Championship Flight, it should be
noted that the A Flight played from significantly shorter tees.
A 4-way playoff was
necessary to determine a B Flight winner as a quartet of members posted 85s to
top the field. Sophia's Dennis Bryant pulled out the win over
Greensboro's James Bagwell, Stokesdale's J. Combs, and Nick Slager of Raleigh.
A 90 was enough to
secure victory in the C Flight for Mocksville's Mark Denton. He was 3
strokes clear of Browns Summit's Jeff Shanberg. Hillsborough's Bob
Wisniewski scored his first Tour victory with a 92 - tops in the D Flight
competition by 8 full shots over Greensboro's Keith Thomas. While
Wisniewski enjoyed the comfortable win, Thomas recorded a Tour milestone with a
D Flight eagle-2 on the 393 yard, par 4, 13th hole, believed to be the only D
Flight eagle in local Tour history.
"Great guys, a nice
day, and an outstanding course made for a lot of fun today", said
Hallenbeck. "We have one more Pre-season event before the regular
season starts - February 28 at Longleaf Golf Club. We are accepting
sign-ups for that venue from any amateur golfer".
