=============================================================== SENIOR AM TOUR "MAJOR" DECIDED AT PINEWOOD CC Asheboro, NC June 27, 2013 Just like their counterparts on the PGA Tour, players on the Senior Amateur Golf Tour get to compete in 4 Major Championships during the course of their season. 100 Tour members signed up for the 3rd such event of the 2013 campaign staged at Pinewood Country Club. As is the case on the pro Tour, the course was up to top standards with perfect greens and lush fairways. "We've been using this venue for about the last ten years 'on-Tour' ", stated Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck, "and it's never been in better shape". Five players took full advantage of the excellent course conditions to post impressive scores on the challenging layout. Two of those players - Durham's Jerry Widdowson of Durham and Greensboro's Travis Jones actually tied for the top spot in the B Flight as the only 2 players in the flight to break 80 with identical 79s. Widdowson has been a regular factor in many recent events, but for Jones it was his first time to break 80 in his last 13 Tour efforts, dating back to last year's National Finals. "A great effort on his part", said Hallenbeck. In the sudden death playoff that occurs after all 1st place finishes "on-Tour", Widdowson prevailed by holing a 15-foot putt on the 1st extra hole for the win. A Flight Winner - Jerry Widdowson No playoffs were necessary in the other 3 flights, even though the margin of victory in each was razor-thin. Zebulon's Randy Bunn took A Flight top honors with a 1-over 73. He edged Greensboro's David Coolidge by a single stroke. (L to R) Championship Flight - Eric Ardery; A Flight -Randy Bunn In the Championship flight (which played from Tees farther back from the rest of the field), Durham's Eric Ardery posted a 74 for a 1 shot win over two players - Burlington's Gary Roberson and Rick Luzar of Pinehurst. In keeping with the trend, the C Flight was also decided by a single shot as Raleigh's John Hall managed to nip Youngsville's Jeff Brown - 86 to 87. The Senior Tour will take a short hiatus for the 4th of July and a make up date that was not necessary and resume play on July 18 at Seven Lakes Country Club. Openings are available for that event. =============================================================== Rules Review It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score? Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm. There will be no trick questions or hidden information. Question from week #204 Gulliver's ball has come to rest about two feet from being out of bounds. There is an out of bounds stake directly opposite Gulliver’s ball. From the following statements, select all that could be true: 1. If the stake interferes with Gulliver's stance or stroke, he may temporarily remove the stake. 2. There could be a Local Rule which permits Gulliver to remove the stake, but only if the stake identifies the OB and is not used to define the OB. 3. As long as Gulliver does not remove the stake from the ground, it is okay for him to move it in place in fairly taking his stance and making his stroke. 4. If Gulliver, in fairly taking his stance, moves the stake there is no penalty, provided he replaces it before making his stroke.
2 and 4 are True; From the Definition for Out of Bounds: Out of Bounds stakes are treated as fixed and are not to be moved. This simple statement reveals why #1 is false. If a player removes a stake there is no escaping a penalty even if he returns the stake to its original position. When you read the definition you find two notes at the end. The second note states the Committee is permitted to make a Local Rule that essentially designates certain OB stakes as obstructions provided they do not define the OB but only identify it. For example, a stone wall is deemed to define the OB line on a particular hole. The Committee has also placed near the wall the occasional white stake to help identify the wall as the OB line. Because the stakes would be placed in the ground inside the OB line (bottom of the wall at ground level), they could interfere with normal play. The Committee could deem these stakes as obstructions on this hole. #3 and #4 essentially cover the same situation. R13-2 has a laundry list of things the player must not do under a variety of situations with exceptions for each. Putting together the proper clauses for this situation, here is what you should come up with: The player must not improve or allow to be improved...the area of his intended stance or swing...by...moving, bending or breaking anything growing or fixed (including immovable obstruction and objects defining out of bounds.) However, the player incurs no penalty if the action occurs ...in fairly taking his stance.) We have the general requirement that we cannot move an OB stake. We also acknowledge the player is entitled to fairly take his stance. This use of the term “fairly” should be interpreted to mean “in the least intrusive way possible”. This may seem to create a potential conflict. He’s allowed to fairly take his stance but he must not move an OB stake? Which Rule overrides and dominates this dilemma? From (2) above we already know the Rules permit an exception to the general Rule not to move an OB stake (a specific Local Rule). So too, R13-2 also creates a specific Rule that exempts the player from a breach in very limited circumstances. You need to recognize that fairly taking a stance is an act separate from that of making a stroke. If Gulliver goes to fairly take his stance and his butt accidentally bumps and moves the OB stake, this specific construct of R13-2 exempts the player from penalty for the bump and movement—provided Gulliver steps back, returns the stake to its original position, and tries again. To avoid penalty, Gulliver must return the stake to its original position. He cannot make a stroke with the stake moved even if it was moved as a result of him fairly taking his stance or in making his stroke without incurring a penalty. THINK: If the movement was accidental in fairly taking your stance, correct it. If the stake is left in the moved position, this then is no longer accidental and the player would be penalized. =============================================================== |

=============================================================== TTour Weather Guidelines Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If Primarily, the course is open, we're going to play. The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness). In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist. Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening. If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start. Bruce |
