RALEIGH'S HAGWOOD GOES LOW FOR SENIOR TOUR WIN
Fuquay-Varina, NC (October 4, 2012) - Darrell Hagwood of Raleigh has been a member of the Senior Amateur Golf Tour since 2007. During that period he has competed in over 80 events "on-Tour". In all that time, he had never had a round like the one he turned in today at Crooked Creek Golf Club, firing a 74 to capture first place honors in the B Flight. Hagwood started out on the right foot by making a birdie on his first hole. Unfortunately, he quickly followed that with a triple bogie on his second. "From that point on, I felt like I was in the zone", stated Hagwood. "I started hitting fairways and greens in regulation. This is my best tournament round ever, not just on-Tour, but anywhere". No fewer than 6 golfers broke 80 in the B Flight. Hagwood's closest competitor was Charlotte's Bob Chandler with a 76. 74 was the magic number today as 3 of the 4 flights were won by that score.
Zebulon's Jim Alford topped the A Flight with his 74, also enjoying a 2-stroke margin over 2 players - Burlington's Dexter Barbee and Tour vet Bob McQueen of Hope Mills.
Arch Reed of Pinehurst finished first in the Championship Flight with the same number. (It should be noted that Reed and his fellow Champ Flight opponents played from tees that were 600 yards longer than those played by the rest of the field). Coincidently he also enjoyed a 2 stroke margin of victory - this time over a trio of players: Raleigh's Don Moore, Lewisville's Eddie McBride and Rockingham's John East.
Not to be outdone for drama, the C Flight produced the closest race of all, with 3 Tour members going back out on the course for a "sudden-death" shoot-out. Another long-time Tour veteran, John Hall of Raleigh, prevailed in the playoff over fellow Raleigh resident James Howard and Durham's Brian Costine after all 3 turned in regulation scores of 81.
Next week is the final regular season event for the Senior Amateur Tour in 2012. Colonial Country Club in Thomasville is the site for that event on Thursday, October 11. The top players "on-Tour" will then be sharpening their games for the National Championship Finals to be held in Pinehurst on November 13 and 14.
